The gadget craze: Whether to consider the latest electronic toys for your kids – Part 2

Providing your kids with the latest electronic gadgets is not necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of new and imaginative gadgets coming onto the marketplace that stimulate a child’s imagination and encourages further interaction with the wider environment. Electronics are not solely reliant on being connected to a television and are more portable now than ever before.

One of the main pitfall in providing kids with these products is that many parents see this as an opportunity to disengage from their kids activities. How often do you know of kids sitting and playing games or doing their own things while the parents are off in a completely different area, often oblivious to what their kids are doing? This might be alright when the kids are in their teenage years and they don’t necessarily need constant adult supervision, but even then there is no harm in spending some time with your kids, enjoying the gadgets together. Getting kids to explain what they are doing, how the gadgets work and possible uses not only gets you connecting with your kids but gets them thinking more widely about their activities and the impacts of what the do around them.

Having the latest gadgets can become a minefield but a suitable balance can be achieved providing parents monitor how often their kids use the gadgets, and encourage healthy outdoor activities with other friends and family.
